St John at Hackney
Open Gates Management project managed the the multi-million pound National Lottery funded restoration of St John at Hackney from 2017-2021. Appointed originally to deliver a comprehensive design review, we went on to deliver all elements of the scheme through to its completion. This involved coordinating the work of a world-class design team and the input of over fifty consultants, surveyors, and other organisations, split over two phases of construction.
Work on the Grade II* listed, 18th century church included a complete restoration of the central nave, doubling its capacity to almost two thousand, and four new levels of support spaces including offices, meeting rooms, toilets and a catering kitchen. The work involved four separate planning applications and nine ecclesiastical faculties alongside a comprehensive programme of stakeholder engagement.
We also delivered a series of interpretation installations in the church and surrounding gardens as well as an exceptional digital art installation by the renowned artist Es Devlin.
